Lab 7 - Internet Server Log File Analysis

In this lab you will analyze the provided logs (in zip file format) using two tools Analog and WebTrends.

Part I: Analog.

  1. First copy the entire analog folder from the csc96b file share on deathstar to c:\ (Root of C:)
  2. Then copy the file CalGold9809.zip to the c:\temp directory and unzip it into C:\Analog\analog 3.11\ directory.
  3. Then using a text editor, Make the changes to C:\Analog\analog 3.11\analog.cfg as shown below then save and close the config file. (Do not include parts that start with dashes)

  4. Double click on Analog.exe to run log analyzer. If a DOS window persists after it says finish, close it.
  5. Look at the output in LogRpt.Htm. You may have to press Refresh (F5) to see the output file.
  6. Repeat the process for each of the other logs: CalGOLD9809unknown.log and CalGOLD9809nc.log and study the results.
  7. What did you learn? Compare it to the materials in the lecture.

Part II: Web Trends

  1. Install webtrends from the WebTrends folder by copying the file wtltrail.exe to c:\temp and then running it. Follow the simple instructions.
  2. Run the Web trends Log Analyzer from the [Start] Programs Menu
  3. Answer the survey
  4. Explore the advanced features this product has to offer. The instructors will come around and show you how you can find the information your were trying to identify from the lecture.

Part III: Cleanup

  1. Please delete the files in c:\temp
