In this lab you will create a small intranet site for an imaginary business. You will be provided with a number of miscellaneous documents, and you will need to analyze the content, develop a site architecture, convert the content to HTML pages using page design best practices, organize the pages using FrontPage Explorer, and publish the web to your child web on the class webserver.

This lab is worth 35 points. The lab is due at the beginning of class on March 17. At that time your site should be published to your  child web on the class webserver.

Scenario:
You were recently hired by MegaCorp to create an intranet site for the company. Until recently, MegaCorp employed about 450 workers in two adjacent buildings in Sacramento, but a recent merger has increased the company to over 1,200 employees in 7 offices scattered around the West Coast. The intranet site you have been assigned is an important part of this expansion, enhancing communication among these offices, and providing you with an opportunity for a big promotion if you develop a quality product. The CEO has made it clear that the site does not have to be fancy -- she just wants it to be fast, work on everybody's computers, and have a consistent,  "clean", and professional look. "Here is the stuff I think we want, use your best judgement..." is her final direction. Listed below are the functional requirements:

  • Pages should look the same for all employees. 40% use Internet Explorer 4, 30% use Internet Explorer 3, and 30% use Netscape Navigator 3.
  • Pages should load quickly. Several of the office have slow connections to the main office where the intranet webserver is located, so pages need to be light.
  • Links to the important portions of the site should be obvious. Many of the new employees are not familiar/comfortable with web browsers.
  • The Staff Directory should load very fast -- Personnel anticipates it will be used heavily.

Instructions:

1. Create an empty web on your Personal Web Server called "MegaCorp."

2. Delete any content in your c:\temp directory. Download the document below to your c:\temp directory and unzip the file into c:\temp directory by clicking on it. These files are the content you are convert into the intranet.
MegaCorp Content (Zip format, 97 KB).

3. Examine the content and import/convert it into your "MegaCorp" web on your Personal Web Server. To look at the documents before you convert them, you may want to download and install the Microsoft Word Viewer if you do not Word installed on your computer. Arrange the files and edit the HTML pages using the principles and best practices discussed in class.

4. At the end of class, publish your content from your "MegaCorp" child web on PWS to the your child web on the class webserver. Go to the FILE menu and select "Publish FrontPage Web...". In the "Publish" dialog, click on the "More Webs..." button, and type in "http://deathstar/[yourweb]" in the "Publish FrontPage Web" dialog (replace [yourweb] with the your child web name on the class webserver). Click on OK, provide the name and password to your child web, and the content will be published to the class webserver.  Verify the content is there by going to your web browser and browse your web at http://deathstar/[yourweb]/

5. When you come in later to finish the assignment, you can directly open your child web on the class webserver by starting FrontPage and clicking on the "More Webs..." button in the "Getting Started" dialog. In the "Open FrontPage Web" dialog, type in "Deathstar" in the "Select a Web server or disk location" box, and click "List Webs" to see all of the child webs on the class webserver. Double-click on your child web, provide the name and password, and FrontPage Explorer opens your child web for editing.
